China Unicom offers 20-yuan package to woo 3G users
CHINA Unicom today introduced a 20-yuan (US$3.2) monthly package, the cheapest 3G package it ever offered, to woo entry-level users besides high-end iPhone users.
The country's No. 2 mobile carrier also plans to launch a public cloud service in Shanghai at a cost of more than 100 million yuan. It will allow customers to transfer pictures, videos and data wirelessly among digital devices, Shanghai Unicom said today.
The 20-yuan package contains 200 minutes of talking time and 100 megabytes of 3G data services available on China Unicom's website.
The attractive price is expected to draw more new 3G users to China Unicom which is competing with China Mobile and China Telecom.
As of March 31, China Unicom had 209 million mobile users, including 48 million 3G users, compared with China Mobile's 59 million 3G users and China Telecom's 43 million 3G users.
On the high end, China Unicom already has many iPhone and Android phone users because it uses the WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) technology, the world's most mature 3G technology.
The public cloud service China Unicom plans to launch will provide each user 10 gigabytes of free online storage space. People can visit and edit the content on cloud through computers and mobile devices.
