China Unicom will launch 4G service this month

China Unicom will launch 4G service on March 18, offering Internet access that is 20 to 50 times faster compared with 3G service, the country's No. 2 mobile carrier said today.

China Mobile and China Telecom already offer 4G service in the world's biggest mobile phone market.

China Unicom will debut 4G service in 25 cities nationwide on March 18. The service is expected to cover 100 cites by the end of this year. It will be based on China-developed TD-LTE (time division-long term evolution) technology. The company will invest 10 billion yuan (US$1.62 billion) in 4G this year, according to Lu Yimin, China Unicom's general manager.

Last week, China Unicom reported a 2.04 billion yuan profit in the fourth quarter, up from 2.02 billion yuan a year ago.

China Unicom will also launch 4G service based on FDD-LTE (frequency-division duplexing) after the government launched licenses for that. This will allow the company to compete better with China Mobile, whose network is built on the 4G TD-LTE standard.

The regulator issued 4G TD-LTE licenses to the three carriers in December.

FDD-LTE is more commercially mature because it has been used in other countries like the United States, South Korea and Britain for several years.

In December, China said it would release FDD-LTE licenses "soon," but did not give a timetable.

China will release FDD-LTE licenses once TD-LTE has grown more competitive to protect the domestic technology, said industry insiders.
