China expects mobile game exports to surge
CHINA’S mobile game exports will grow rapidly this year because more high-quality titles and professional game distributors are helping domestic game firms expand overseas, industry officials said yesterday.
Shanghai-based Gamefox recently signed a deal with Horizon Link, a Japanese distributor, to publish its latest title, War of Sorcery, in Japan, ahead of its debut in China and other international markets.
Zhang Yanan, an analyst of US-based research firm International Data Corp, said the quality of made-in-China mobile games have greatly improved and gained global awareness.
Kabam, a Silicon Valley mobile game firm, recently announced a cooperation deal with three Asian game firms, including two from China, to help market their mobile game products globally.
It also committed to investing US$50 million via tie-ups with Asian game developers to expand overseas by the middle of this year, said Kevin Chou, chief executive of Kabam.
Kabam predicted revenue to jump up to 80 percent this year to US$650 million as it expands in China and introduces Chinese games to Western markets. Its revenue surged 100 percent from a year earlier to US$360 million last year.
