China expects to launch 5G service in 2020
CHINA is developing the next-generation or 5G technology that the world’s biggest mobile phone market will adopt in 2020, the industry regulator said during a forum yesterday.
“China has started 5G research already and planned to adopt the world’s leading telecommunications technology in future,” Liu Lihua, vice director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said at the opening forum of the Mobile Asia Expo 2014 yesterday in Shanghai.
China’s 5G developments is in line with the global standard since it formed a special team in 2013, Liu said.
The 5G technology will be ready around 2020, according to analysts.
Though details are sparse now, the 5G is expected to be 100 times faster than current 4G networks.
China Mobile, the world’s No. 1 mobile carrier, requires 5G networks with higher speed so that it can offer users new services such as virtual reality, cloud and interactive multimedia services as new income generators, Xi Guohua, China Mobile’s chairman, told the forum which ends tomorrow.
Huawei Technologies may invest US$600 million in 5G before 2018, and ZTE has set up a team for 5G research.
Xi also said China Mobile aims to invest 240 billion yuan (US$38.5 billion) to build more 4G base stations this year.
