China set as biggest 4G market by 2019
CHINA will be the world’s biggest 4G market in 2019 because one in four global 4G mobile users will be from the country, Ericsson Inc said yesterday in Shanghai.
By that year, there will be 700 million 4G users in China, accounting for 25 percent of the global 4G users. The data traffic generated in China will grow 15 times in 2019 compared with the volume last year and surpassing 10 times the global growth, according to Ericsson, the world’s No. 1 telecommunications equipment maker.
“Smartphone popularity and social media development will fuel traffic demand in the country to become the world’s biggest 4G market,” said Chang Gang, Ericsson China’s vice president.
The 4G, or LTE, networks allow users to access new services like video conferencing and multiplayer games on mobile phones. There are two 4G technologies — the China-developed TD-LTE and the FDD-LTE developed by Western firms.
China issued licenses for TD-LTE to the three domestic telecom carriers in December.
China Mobile aims to build 50 million 4G base stations nationwide by the end of this year and launch 4G phones costing under 1,000 yuan (US$161), the world’s No. 1 telco said on Wednesday.
China will issue licenses for FDD-LTE “at a suitable time,” the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has said.
Ericsson aims for a “double-digit” market share in China after the country issues FDD-LTE licenses in future.
