China set to unveil guide for 5G in 2018
CHINA is expected to release the standard of next-generation 5G mobile communications technology in 2018, with testing set to start as soon as 2016, Shanghai Daily learned yesterday at an industry forum.
China will begin testing 5G technology as soon as next year and set up the first version of 5G standard in 2018, said Wang Zhiqin, a head researcher of the China Academy of Telecommunication Research, a government-backed research agency under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
“We are going to release the original version of the 5G standard in 2018 and start commercial use of 5G no later than South Korea and Japan (in 2020),” Wang said during the annual summit of Qualcomm, the world’s biggest mobile chip designer.
Compared with the current 4G, the 5G technology offers users peak bandwidth of 10 gigabytes per second, 100 times compared with 4G level.
China Mobile, which has more than 200 million 4G users nationwide, said 5G’s wider bandwidth allows for more applications such as the Internet of Things and industrial network connection, according to Huang Yuhong, vice head of the telecom carrier’s research lab.
More than 250 million consumers in China have used 4G networks since the technology debuted two years ago, according to Meng Pu, Qualcomm China’s chairman.
Qualcomm, which expects global smartphone sales to hit 8.5 billion units in five years until 2019, will increase investment in China including expanding its Shanghai-based research center and penetrating the smart home and smart city projects in the country, according to Meng.
