China soon to be world's largest smartphone market

CHINA will surpass the United States to become the world's No. 1 smartphone market by sales, thanks to the popularity of its low-cost smartphones, US-based research firm International Data Corp said today.

Chinese mainland will account for 26.5 percent of all global smartphone sales in 2012, compared with 17.8 percent for the United States. The figures were 18.3 percent and 21.3 percent last year, according to IDC.

"There will be no such words like feature phone or smartphone soon because every phone will be a smartphone," said Wang Ying, an analyst at another research firm Analysys International.

Compared with basic feature phones, smartphones run on mobile operating systems like Apple's iOS, Google-developed Android and Windows Mobile system.

China's smartphone market will continue to be lifted by the sub-US$200 Android segment, said IDC.

Top Chinese brands such as Huawei Technologies, Lenovo Mobile and ZTE Corp have all launched their Android phones priced under 1,000 yuan (US$159).
