China to build world's largest 3G network

CHINA Mobile will invest heavily to build 200,000 3G base stations in 2010, more than double last year, to cover all county-level cities nationwide – forming the world's biggest 3G network, the carrier said today during an Expo forum.

The home-grown 4G technology, which is developed by firms led by China Mobile, will probably, or "at least 70 percent" be regarded as an international 4G standard, according to Zhao Houlin, deputy Secretary-general of ITU (International Telecommunication Union).

"The TD-SCDMA has been proved a mature technology because it gets wide support from the whole industry chain from carriers, chip designers to equipment makers," Lou Qinjian, vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said during the TD International Development Summit held in the United Nations Pavilion today.

In January, China issued 3G licenses to carriers, which allowed users to access to high-speed data services such as video calls and films download on their phones. China Mobile adopted network with TD-SCDMA (time division-synchronous code division multiple access), a home-grown 3G technology.

By the end of March, China had developed more than 17 million 3G users and the TD-SCDMA user based contributed more than one-third as 7.69 million, according to the ministry.

Globally speaking, the 3G user base accounted about 15 percent of total user base now, which means China has greater potential to develop 3G and 4G technologies, Zhao said.

By March, China had a total of 780 million mobile phone users and only two percent of them were 3G users.

China Mobile will build 200,000 base stations to expand TD-SCDMA coverage nationwide in 2010,compared with 8.5 million in 2009, said Sha Yuejia, China Mobile's vice president.

The TD-LTE, a 4G technology evolved from TD-SCDMA, will "70 percent or more possibility" be accepted by ITU to become a global 4G standard in October, ITU's Zhao added.

The TD-LTE (time division-long term evolution), which provides 10 to 20 times higher speeds compared with 3G, is testing in the Shanghai Expo site.

The TD-LTE's development is supported by domestic and overseas firms including ZTE Corp and Nokia Siemens.
