China to lead global growth in IOT sector
IN-VEHICLE communications and entertainment, wearable computing devices and smart home will be popular applications for Internet of Things in China, industry officials said yesterday.
The lower cost and energy consumption of sensors and chips, reliable Internet connection and booming smartphone development have fueled the IOT sector in China, one of the core technologies supported by the government to help China boost its economy development and fuel innovation, said Daniel Cooley, vice president of US-based Silicon Labs.
The Internet of Things, or IOT, refers to wireless connections among various devices.
There will be more than 40 billion wireless connected devices globally by 2020, of which China will represent more than 20 percent. The Chinese IOT market is also expected to reach 10 trillion yuan (US$1.6 trillion), according to figures by ABI Research.
“The IOT offers China another opportunity to lead the world’s new technology industry after it lagged behind in the PC and Internet revolutions in the past decades,” said Michael Hurlston, Broadcom’s executive vice president of worldwide sales.
Broadcom, which ships 7 million chips a day for device connection through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, aims to explore market opportunities in China, especially in wearable computing and Internet of Vehicle market segments.
By 2020, China is expected to represent 35 percent of new car sales globally, representing great possibilities for in-car services like adaptive headlights, surround view parking, emergency call system and forward collision avoidance.
