ChinaJoy gets male models, cross dressers to bypass showgirl limit
BESIDES bikini-clad girls, visitors to the ChinaJoy 2012 that opens to the public tomorrow will find a new attraction – foreign male models and cross dressers also known as Weiniang.
More male models will appear in the country's biggest game fair after ChinaJoy organizers cracked down on the "vulgarity" of scantily clad female models during the show.
China Digital Entertainment Expo and Conference (ChinaJoy), which celebrates its 10th anniversary, is labeled as the No. 1 annual game fair in the country but has been more notorious for scantily dressed showgirls who dance and pose at booths in bras and hot pants.
The expo has also drawn the attention of show organizers and government bureaus like the General Administration of Press and Publication and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology who slapped limitations on the amount of skin that can be shown.
Exhibitors, including top game firms like Tencent and Shanda, have reacted rapidly.
Shanghai-based Shanda Entertainment has established a team of 25 male models including foreign models this year, a first for the company.
The cost of gameboys is higher than showgirls but it helps Shanda to circumvent the showgirl limit, industry insiders said.
Some firms have also recruited Weiniang for Chinajoy show, several industry sources told Shanghai Daily.
Weiniang is a kind of cross dresser and mostly refer to men who like wearing ladies' apparel.
The game show opens today with a summit forum and will open to the public tomorrow at the Shanghai New International Center in the Pudong New Area.
More than 400 game firms will take part in the show and display about 600 latest products, 35 percent of them are debuts of the domestic market.
The show is expected to attract 160,000 visitors totally in 2012, 10 times with the first ChinaJoy show held in 2004, Sun Shouchang, GAPP's vice director, said during the forum today.
