Chinese firms lift shares
THE Lenovo Group Ltd and Huawei Technologies increased their shares of the global smartphone market in the first quarter while that of market leaders Samsung and Apple declined, a US-based research firm said yesterday.
Lenovo and Huawei captured around 5 percent share each in the global market by the end of March, up from 4 percent a year ago, Strategy Analytics said.
Lenovo, which spent US$2.9 billion to acquire Motorola Mobility business, has expanded its business in China and Russia. Huawei, China’s biggest telecommunications equipment maker, generated more sales in overseas markets especially in Europe.
Samsung and Apple’s market shares fell in the first quarter. Samsung’s dropped to 31.2 percent in the period from 32.4 percent a year earlier. Apple’s iPhone took 15.3 percent share, down from 17.5 percent a year ago, said Strategy Analytics.
