Chinese phones play major role
CHINA’S smartphone sales jumped over 16 percent year on year in the third quarter, almost double the global growth rate, as Chinese vendors played an increasing role in the market, a research firm said yesterday.
Chinese brands Huawei, Xiaomi and Lenovo were the top-three domestic brands. Globally, Chinese firms took three positions among the top-five brands and firms like Huawei and ZTE are gaining share in the high-end and overseas market segments through new technologies, industry officials said.
In the global market, Huawei took 8.4 percent share in the third quarter, followed by 5.7 percent each for Xiaomi and Lenovo, according to TrendForce, a Taiwan-based research firm.
Chinese smartphone sales jumped 16.3 percent to 150 million units in the period, compared with a 9.17 percent growth for the global market with sales of 332 million units, according to TrendForce.
Huawei and ZTE have developed pressure-detecting technology similar to Apple Inc’s Force Touch used in the latest iPhone. The pressure-detecting screens detect the force of a tap on the trackpad and respond differently to variations in pressure.
ZTE Corp targets the high-end smartphone market segment with Axon models costing over 3,000 yuan (US$473).
