Chinese users able to get free upgrade to Windows 10
MICROSOFT Corp will tie up with several top Chinese IT firms, including Lenovo Group Ltd and Qihoo 360, to offer “several hundred millions” users in China a free upgrade to Windows 10 that will be available this summer, the US-based software giant said yesterday.
Microsoft also said it would work with Xiaomi Corp and Lenovo on a Windows phone under its strategy to focus on cloud and mobile business instead of depending on software license income.
Lenovo expects to debut smartphones based on Windows 10 in 2015.
Chinese users with Windows 7 or later Windows systems are able to get free upgrade to Windows 10, which will debut in the summer in 190 countries and regions globally including China, Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s executive vice president, said during a conference in Shenzhen yesterday.
Users can download the free upgrade in Lenovo’s 2,500 outlets and on Tencent and Qihoo 360’s apps.
The free upgrade to Windows 10 signals that Microsoft wants to offer users cloud-based services across various devices including PC, smartphone and tablet, analysts said.
Qihoo 360, the country’s biggest Internet security firm, also said it will cooperate strategically with Microsoft to become the sole Internet security partner for Windows 10, said Zhou Hongyi, Qihoo 360’s chairman.
Over 97 percent of Chinese computer users choose Microsoft Windows systems, said Qihoo 360 with over 500 million PC users.
Globally, Microsoft has over 1.5 billion users including “several hundred millions” users in China, it said.
