City government, Tencent to jointly build "Internet+" Smart City

TENCENT Inc and Shanghai government signed an cooperation agreement on city innovation and upgraded IT services today, the latest step of Shanghai to issue innovation and technology-driven economy transformation.

The cooperation between the two sides covers big data, cloud computing, smart device, Tencent’s innovation center in Shanghai and local services based on WeChat, such as passport application and public utility payment on the China’s most popular social platform.

Yang Xiong, Shanghai’s mayor and Pony Ma, the chairman of the China’s No. 1 dot-com giant, attended the cooperation ceremony held yesterday in Shanghai.

The cooperation will help Shanghai establish itself as a Smart City, covering the convergence between Internet and traditional sectors such as medical, restaurant, shopping, logistics, ticketing, universities and tourism sites, according to the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology.

Tencent has recently debut city-level services on WeChat in Shanghai, offering 14 kinds of services for making appointment with doctors, violation record checking for drivers and electricity bill payment. More than 1 million local users had tried the services by the end of March.

The both sides will bring fresh airs in the sectors like culture, medical, finance, education, automotive and smart device, through Internet and advanced technologies, according to Tencent.

Besides Tencent, Shanghai government had signed agreements with Baidu, China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom for Smart City project.
