City to spur development of electronic information services

SHANGHAI will kick off a package of policies to encourage information consumption, including cloud computing, Internet-based finance services and online localized services sectors, a government official told Shanghai Daily during the ongoing CPPCC session.

The package is expected to be published by the Spring Festival this year as a part of the city’s move to enact national policies.

Shanghai has drafted the plan with support from leading firms including restaurant review website Dianping and online literature provider Shanda,

said Jiang Ning, vice director of software division of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology.

Jiang spoke during a session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Shanghai Committee (CPPCC) yesterday.

“Information consumption will become a major engine for economic development in Shanghai. It also is an industry without pollution or other side effects,” said Jiang.

China aims to boost information consumption revenue to 3.2 trillion yuan (US$524 billion) by 2015, with an annual growth rate of more than 20 percent, the State Council said last year.

Shanghai has its own advantages in developing information services with its strong background in finance and e-commerce sectors. The city will develop cloud computing and large data services and boost Internet-based finance services.
