Connecting devices valued at US$700b
CHINA will lead the world in growing the business of connecting devices ranging from mobile phones, tablets, laptops and other consumer electronics to US$700 billion by 2020, according to the world's biggest mobile communications industry association.
The growth will be six folds from this year's US$116 billion, the GSM Association (GSMA) said yesterday. The amount includes a revenue forecast of US$393 billion and the balance will be savings in cost and service improvement in China.
"China is not only the world's largest mobile market but is using this to advantage by creating new applications, products and services that can improve people's daily lives and advance its economy," said Svetlana Grant, GSMA'S director smart cities of connected living programs.
China has positioned mobile technology at the center of its expansion, from a booming car industry, rapid development of new smart city projects and machine-to-machine (M2M) connection, according to GSMA.
Connected vehicles, growing adoption of private building security and connected utilities and essential services are three drivers powering the growth in China, GSMA said.
China, which now has over 1 billion mobile phone users, added 39 million in the first quarter, followed by India which added 25 million in the period, according to Ericsson Inc, the world's biggest telecom equipment maker.
China should auction licenses for the faster 4G mobile network soon amid rising demand for more device connections, said Erik Feng, Ericsson China's executive vice president.
