Coolpad rides 4G wave to boost sales
COOLPAD, the country’s No. 3 smartphone brand, aims to sell 70 percent more handsets this year thanks to surging demand for 4G models, the Shenzhen-based firm said yesterday.
Coolpad is looking to sell 60 million phones in 2014, including 40 million 4G models, compared with last year’s 35 million sales.
The 4G network and service offered by China Mobile and China Telecom, which debuted its 4G phones in 16 cities nationwide on Tuesday, will offer consumers more choice and boost demand for smartphones, according to Li Jun, general manager of Coolpad’s telecommunications division. “It’s a good opportunity for us to improve our brand awareness and expand market share in the 4G era,” Li said.
All Coolpad phones costing more than 800 yuan (US$129) will feature 4G functions, which is expected to help the company to penetrate the middle- and high-end market, where handsets usually are in the 2,000-yuan range.
Earlier, China-brand phone makers used to focus on the sub-1,000 yuan market.
Smartphone sales in the first quarter rose 22 percent year on year to 110.5 million units. The market leader was South Korea’s Samsung with a 17.8-percent share, followed by Lenovo (11.4 percent), Coolpad (9.6 percent) and Huawei (8.8 percent), Beijing-based research firm Analysys International said.
