Costco starts sales on Tmall with a limited number of products

CONSUMERS are not giving serious considerations to US retailer Costco’s presence on Alibaba’s Tmall due to a limited selection of products although the Chinese e-commerce giant is making huge efforts to lure overseas vendors after an initial public offering last month.

Costco is now offering about 120 items such as food and beverage and household general merchandise through its official website on Tmall, the B2C website of Alibaba Group.

“The products are much more expensive than the foods sold at Costco’s US stores and the delivery process takes too long, so I won’t bother giving it a try,” said Sherry Cao, a Shanghai office lady in her late 20s.

Costco's Asian presence includes 19 shops in Japan and 10 each in China’s Taiwan and South Korea through majority-owned subsidiaries.

Its online website is only accessible to those who live in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Mexico.

Products sold at Costco’s Tmall store normally takes 5 to 20 days to be delivered as it has to go through customs clearance procedures.

Alibaba said efforts are under way to step up collaboration with overseas vendors and at the same time allow more Chinese people living in foreign countries to buy from its sites.

Local Internet consultancy iResearch estimated online retail sales to jump 45.8 percent from from a year go to 2.76 trillion yuan this year.
