Ctrip sees expansion for Skysea cruises
CTRIP.COM Inc aims to increase self-operated cruises for Chinese passengers within a few years after operating its first cruise last week which was also a first in the domestic tourism market, the firm said yesterday.
China’s biggest online tourism website plans to boost China’s cruise market with its own Skysea cruise liner, and Shanghai is expected to become the top international cruising hub in Asia along with Hong Kong and Singapore, industry insiders said.
Shanghai-based Ctrip plans Skysea cruises to South Korea and Japan, favorite spots for Chinese tourists. It plans to operate 53 cruise trips this year after its first trip to the two countries last week.
It also plans to open new cruise routes to Taiwan and Southeast Asia, said Fan Min, chairman of Skysea Holding International, a joint venture with Ctrip and Stone Capital.
“It used to be a niche segment in China’s tourism market but the cruise business has a great potential as consumption increases and demand surges for comfortable trips,” Fan said.
The Chinese cruise market has room to grow as the penetration rate was only 0.03 percent, compared with 2-3 percent in the US, he said.
