Data package potential
SPONSORED mobile data services will create a US$6 billion market in Asia annually by 2019, a US-based IT service provider said yesterday, adding that Chinese users would accept entertainment contents for free data.
The sponsored data packages offered by brand owners and mobile service providers, such as advertising video clips with free airport Wi-Fi certification, will become more popular as Chinese users like accessing the Internet outdoors without being charged for it, a survey released by Syniverse showed.
In Asia, sponsored data could unlock an annual revenue opportunity of as much as US$6 billion by 2019 — and US$23 billion globally — through sponsorship of mobile data services. It can also shift the behavior to drive as much as 40 percent increase in usage.
“The survey results should motivate operators and their partners to consider sponsored-data plans as a way to drive revenue as well as consumer engagement,” said Mary Clark, chief marketing officer of Syniverse.
