Data rollover set to start tomorrow

CHINA’S major telecommunication carriers will allow users to transfer unused megabyte allocations to the following month starting tomorrow in a bid to soothe mobile users’ complaints of high Internet charges.

Users of China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom’s monthly data packages will be able to move their unused megabytes for use in November, the three carriers announced yesterday.

However, there will be no extension of the unused megabyte allocation for use in the third month, the carriers said.

Users of the three mobile carriers don’t need to apply to take advantage of this new automatic policy.

The latest move by the three mobile carriers is part of a national strategy to offer faster broadband and lower Internet costs to encourage information consumption.

This is in line with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s call for a more open market to provide customers with more services and cheaper fees.

In May, the three mobile carriers announced faster broadband services and a new round of discounts on Internet charges in response to Premier Li Keqiang’s call for more advanced digital systems.

The country’s three largest mobile carriers cut the price of their data packages by more than 30 percent on average.

China has about 650 million mobile Internet users. By the end of March, more than 2.27 million 3G and 4G base stations had been built to offer services to mobile broadband users.
