Deals set to speed up technology trade

CHINA signed agreements with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and several other global institutions yesterday to deepen cooperation in trade and transfer of technology to speed up the country’s innovation.

The deals will accelerate the development of technology which is key to quicken China’s industrial upgrading and innovation, senior officials said at the 2nd China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair, which opened yesterday.

The cooperation deals were between the fair’s organizing committee and UNIDO, as well as some foreign chambers of commerce and Chinese associations.

“Technology transfer and technology development go hand in hand. More exchanges can help inspire production of technology in a highly globalized world,” Li Yong, director-general of UNIDO, said in his keynote speech.

Li said the fair is an outstanding platform for the exchange of technology.

The Ministry of Science and Technology said China’s trade of technology jumped 25 times from 1978 to US$93.1 billion in 2013. Nearly 500,000 people work in the sector and more than 300,000 projects were completed last year in the country.

Fang Aiqing, vice commerce minister, said China will deepen efforts to build an environment for technology trading.

“We will encourage collaboration among government, corporate and academic society to forge an effective system. Also, we will continue to open up the market to deepen international cooperation,” Fang said.

Xu Kuangdi, honorary president of the governing board at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said the rapid development of technology is the only way for China to sustain its economic growth.

“No matter in agricultural, manufacturing or services sector, technology is the answer to many problems concerning growth bottleneck,” Xu said.

Shen Xuejun, senior vice president of Siemens China, said China doesn’t have the time to go through the development paradigm that most Western countries have experienced. Advanced technologies and innovation patterns represented by digital manufacturing and intelligent infrastructure can give China a solution to overtake others quickly in future, Shen said.
