Development of robotics set to flourish

THE development of robotics is set to bloom as companies spend funds on human-like robots, chips able to detect neighboring environment and react, and virtual reality technology, Shanghai Daily learned during an industry conference yesterday.
A human-like robot or humanoid called Yangyang featuring facial expression, able to hug and shake hands stole the spotlight with a three-minute show at the Global Mobile Internet Conference yesterday.
The robot is co-developed by Hiroshi Ishiguro, professor at Osaka University, and Shanghai-based Shenqing Industry Co.
People will in the future be surrounded by robots which will be used in retailing, learning and health care sectors, according to Ishiguro.
An entry-level humanoid costs an affordable US$2,000.
Qualcomm, the world’s biggest mobile chip designer, said it has developed chips used in robots or drones, which can react fast in any environment.
China has a “10-year” period to develop both industrial and humanoid products that can be used in manufacturing, health care, education and other sectors, said Siasun, a Shenyang-based company.
