E-book reader for US$147
HANWANG Technology Co will launch an entry-level e-book reader costing less than 1,000 yuan (US$147) later this year, the company said yesterday.
E-book reader sellers, including Hanwang, Amazon and Barnes & Noble, are all cutting prices in the face of the challenge from Apple's iPad.
Hanwang will penetrate the consumer market through low-cost products priced at 1,000 yuan or less, Wang Bangjiang, vice president of Hanwang, said at Chinajoy, the country's biggest game show being held in Shanghai.
Hanwang's current major products, costing 2,000 to 3,000 yuan, target high-end government and enterprise clients.
The Shenzhen-listed company will introduce a color e-book reader at the end of this year or next year.
Also at Chinajoy, Shanda Entertainment launched an e-book reader called Bambook, a device that can be charged using sunlight.
