E-book reader now cheaper
SHANDA Entertainment said yesterday it had cut the price of e-book reader Bambook by half, after market leader Hanwang Technology Co's slashed the price of its e-book readers by 40 percent on average in May.
Shanda's move suggests that Chinese e-book reader vendors plan to cash in through online content rather than hardware sales, industry insiders said.
Bambook, with a 6-inch e-ink screen, Wi-Fi and 3G connection and Shanda's online literature website, now costs 499 yuan (US$76), compared with the original price of 998 yuan. Meanwhile, users who buy online books worth 499 yuan on Shanda's Website can get a free Bambook, according to Guo Zhaohui, chief executive of Shanda Guoke, a subsidiary of Shanda.
