Entry-level phones may help Meizu boost sales
CHINESE smartphone maker Meizu plans to sell more entry-level handsets costing under 1,000 yuan (US$161) as it aims to grab market share from Xiaomi and also to set its own ecosystem by increasing sales.
Meizu, which debuted yesterday the new Mei Blue Note 2 model starting at 799 yuan, has sold 5 million Mei Blue Note entry-level phones since it debuted at the beginning of this year.
The new model supports both China Mobile and China Unicom networks and features a 5.5-inch screen, a metal home button that has several functions and external memory of 160 gigabytes. The phone will be available online on June 12.
Its rival Xiaomi Red Note sells at 699 yuan but it doesn’t support dual-network and high-volume external memory.
With a US$590 million investment from Alibaba in February, Meizu aims to boost its presence in mobile Internet and smart home entertainment, industry insiders said.
Meizu teams up with 110 smart device partners to offer users services on wearable computing, smart home and automotive electronics.
Meizu said yesterday that it will launch a set-top box with Alibaba to offer users online video content from Discovery and other content providers, 90 percent of them free.
