Etao backs product comparison

ETAO.COM, the online shopping search site of Alibaba's Taobao unit, yesterday said it will cooperate further with shopping websites to provide prices, services, logistics and payment information so that customers can easily compare various items from the Internet.

Meanwhile, Alibaba Group will inject 1 billion yuan (US$157 million) into Etao to help independent business-to-consumer sites advertise themselves and attract more customers.

After a year of operation, Etao now includes product information from about 5,000 independent shopping websites in various segments, including consumer electronics, apparels, food and special offers in 600 daily deals sites.

"We encourage users to compare products before they shop, not only prices, but also standards in customer service and speed of delivery," said Wu Yongming, president of Etao.

Hu Yanping, director at Data Center of China Internet, said: "Online shopping search sites will eventually prosper in China as they can help customers screen and choose millions of items from various shopping websites."

You Tiayu, an iResearch analyst, said Etao may prove to be a very important source for independent shopping websites to gain visitors and potential buyers.
