Festivities lift Dianping to record highs
DIANPING.COM has surpassed US-based Opentable as the world’s biggest online booking restaurant website, which also represents rapid development of Chinese O2O (online-to-offline) market.
Driven by Valentine’s Day and the Chinese New Year, the daily number of Dianping’s online booking deals touched 120,000 in February, surpassing Opentable’s 100,000 daily deals, according to the Shanghai-based Dianping. It is China’s largest website for location-based food and entertainment services similar to Yelp Inc and Groupon Inc in the US.
More than 70 percent of Dianping users in Shanghai booked tables for the Valentine’s Day on Saturday. The average booking table earned restaurants on an average 366 yuan (US$59).
Besides online booking deals for restaurants and hotels, Dianping aims to create O2O services for consumers as it seeks to expand in the marriage, tourism and cinema sectors after it sold a 20 percent stake to dot-com giant Tencent Inc a year ago.
“For Dianping, it’s a year of accelerating business growth in 2015,” its Chief Executive Zhang Tao said earlier.
Dianping’s average monthly transactions of pre-paid coupons totaled 2 billion yuan (US$320 million) in 2014.
The company has also expanded its business in smaller cities to compete with rivals like Meituan.com and Nuomi.com.
