Fiber optic for fast online use
CHINA Telecom will install fiber optic cable in all new homes in Shanghai and this will allow users to enjoy Internet speed that is five times faster than traditional copper cables, the telco's Shanghai branch said yesterday.
"We are building a next-generation city-wide network, consisting of upgraded broadband, Wi-Fi and 3G," said Hua Ruiqiang, senior market director of Shanghai Telecom.
The telco has invested a total of 26 billion yuan (US$4 billion) over the past two years to install fiber optic cables in the city. More than 800,000 families in existing homes have benefited from upgraded Internet access via fiber optic. The network speed for users' home broadband is at least 10 megabits per second, five times faster than existing speed.
With the high speed network, users can enjoy various services such as online video and cyber storage, Hua said.
The telco also aims to cut the average charge of broadband by 20 times from last year to 2015.
At present, Shanghai Telecom has about 4 million broadband subscribers and takes 90 percent of the city's home broadband market.
The telco previously said Shanghai will have the fastest broadband connection nationwide by the end of next year, but it didn't say how fast it would be.
