Former China Mobile executive drops death verdict appeal

The former deputy general manager of China Mobile, the world's largest mobile operator by subscribers, has given up his right to appeal the death sentence after he was convicted of taking bribes.

Zhang Chunjiang, 53, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for taking 7.46 million yuan (US$1.15 million) in bribes between 1994 and 2009 by the Intermediate People's Court of Cangzhou City in northern Hebei Province on July 22.

Zhang became the highest-ranking official in China's telecom industry indicted on corruption charges, the Beijing Times reported today.

His lawyer Zhou Xinguang said Zhang gave up his right to appeal yesterday, the deadline to file an appeal, the report said.

Zhang is currently held in Qincheng Prison in Beijing's suburbs.
