Former Microsoft VP Zhang Yaqin joins Baidu as president

ZHANG Yaqin, former vice president at Microsoft and chairman of Microsoft China Research & Development Group, has joined Baidu as president to head new business developments as the Chinese company boosts spending in research and development in recent years.

He would report directly to Robin Li, founder, chairman and chief executive of Baidu.

"Zhang Yaqin's deep technology understanding and rich business experience would contribute to Baidu's news business initiatives," Baidu's Li said in an email statement today.

Zhang, a protege of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, joined the US company in 1999 and has headed several business departments including infrastructure research, product development and strategic collaboration.

"I'm thrilled to join Baidu at a time when Internet industry is going through a major shift toward mobile Internet," Zhang said.

Earlier this year, Baidu set up an artificial intelligence laboratory in Silicon Valley in the United States to boost its research work to catch up with Internet giants like Google and Apple.

Andrew Ng, former co-founder of online learning site Coursera, was named as chief scientist at the company to head Baidu’s research lab.
