GSA gets 1st mainlander chairman
THE appointment of a 30-year Chinese semiconductor veteran as the first chairman of the Global Semiconductor Alliance to come from the Chinese mainland marked the rise of China’s semiconductor industry, the GSA said yesterday.
Leo Li, who heads Shanghai-based chip designer Spreadtrum Communications, was yesterday named as chairman of the GSA board of directors for 2016 and 2017. He replaced former GSA chairman who was a senior executive at Qualcomm, the world’s top chip designer.
“The industry is constantly evolving, and GSA has been instrumental in solving a variety of challenges and promoting collaboration between its member companies and partners,” Li said. “I am looking forward to expanding cooperation and innovation in the dynamic global and Chinese semiconductor industry.”
The industry, especially the Chinese chip market, has great potential in five to 10 years in promising sectors such as 5G, high-end smartphones and the Internet of Things, Li added.
Jodi Shelton, president of the GSA, said: “GSA will greatly benefit from his (Li) global perspective and technical expertise, enabling GSA to expand its collaboration between China and the worldwide semiconductor industry.”
GSA will also open a new office in Shanghai.
