Geak beats Apple Inc with time to spare

GEAK Electronics launched its second-generation smartwatch yesterday, months before the debut of Apple Inc’s smartwatch.

Demand for wearable computing devices is set to rise and the market is forecast to be worth US$10 billion next year, according to observers.

“Smartwatch is a buzzword in the industry and probably the next spotlight after smartphones,” said Gu Xiaobin, chief executive of Shanghai-based Geak, which is invested by Shanda Group’s billionaire founder Chen Tianqiao.

A smartwatch that connects with a smartphone or Wi-Fi network allows users to answer calls and control PowerPoint presentation. It is one of the fastest growing wearable computing segments globally. Samsung, Apple, Motorola and Sony have all developed their own smartwatches.

The Geak Watch II, featuring a round screen, a customized Android system and a longer battery life of 18 days between each charge, costs from 1,999 yuan (US$327). The Geak Watch II Pro costs 2,499 yuan and can monitor heart rate.

The square Apple Watch’s starting price is US$349.
