Geak taps smart watch amid US$10b market
GEAK Electronics will launch its second-generation smart watch and the country’s first round-shaped smart watch in September, the Shanghai-based firm said yesterday.
The coming launch of smart watches by Apple Inc and Google Inc will boost demand for wearable computing devices into an expected market size of US$10 billion next year, said Gu Xiaobin, chief executive of Geak, a start-up company invested by Shanda Group’s founder billionaire Chen Tianqiao.
Apple is set to launch its own smart watch in September, industry sources said citing leaks from its supply chain.
Geak Watch 2, which features a round screen, a customized Android system and a longer battery life of 18 days between each charge, costs about 2,000 yuan (US$322), said Geak, which declined to reveal further information.
A smart watch that connects with a smartphone or Wi-Fi network allows users to answer calls and control Powerpoint presentation. It is one of the fastest growing wearable computing segments globally. Many tech giants including Samsung and Sony have invested heavily in the sector or launched products.
Google and Motorola launched a Moto 360 smart watch during a Google developer conference last month.
The global sales of smart watches will rise to 7.44 million units this year from 1.23 million units in 2013 and triple to 24.97 million units next year, according to ABI Research.
