Giant Interactive Q2 profit rises 19.6%
Giant Interactive Group Inc saw its net profit jump 19.6 percent year on year in the second quarter, thanks to its rich array of online and mobile games.
Giant also debuted a FPS (first-person shooter) game covering the Diaoyu Islands dispute between China and Japan earlier this month, which has already attracted several million players.
Shanghai-based Giant owns a rich pipeline of games, including six computer games and one mobile game. Giant Chief Executive Liu Wei said they will develop at least one more mobile game by the year’s end.
Giant’s new online game, World of Xianxia, also generated a solid growth, Morgan Stanley said in a research note.
In the second quarter, Giant posted a net profit of 368 million yuan (US$59.9 million), up 19.6 percent from a year earlier. Revenue was 588 million yuan, up 11.3 percent.
The company boasted 2.33 million active paying accounts for online games, rising 5 percent year on year. “As an innovator in online gameplay and monetization of the MMO (Massively multiplayer Online) games in China, we are now in a better position to further grow this business,” Liu said.
