Govt seeks to stop antivirus software leaks
GOVERNMENT bureaus across the country have been told to stop buying antivirus software from overseas developers such as Symantec Corp and Kaspersky Lab.
Due to concerns over Internet security, five Chinese firms — Qihoo 360, Kingsoft Corp, Venustech, Beijing Jiangmin and CA-Jinchen — have been selected to provide all antivirus software, the government said on its procurement information website.
Scrutiny of foreign companies, especially in the Internet security sector, has been increased in the wake of Edward Snowden’s revelations about spying programs conducted by the United States’ National Security Agency, the website said.
While Russia’s Kaspersky has been removed from the government procurement list, its products can still be used for private and commercial applications, its China branch said yesterday. Symantec declined to comment on the issue.
Beijing-based Venustech said malicious attacks from overseas computers have long been a problem in the country.
Qihoo 360, which has 500 million customers across China, said in a statement that the government must be alert to the threat posed by Internet security products, which could provide a backdoor to sensitive data.
