Great potential for M2M tech on high demand
THE M2M (machine-to-machine) technology offers great potential because of surging demand in industries like automotive, manufacturing and healthcare, Shanghai Daily learned at a telecommunication forum yesterday.
With over 50 million M2M connections, accounting for 27 percent of the world’s level by the end of 2013, China is the global leader in adopting the technology, according to the GSM Association.
“It’s a great market in China where M2M is used in innovation and technology upgrade,” Sean Horan, director of M2M business development of AT&T Business Solutions, said at the Mobile Asia Expo 2014 yesterday.
AT&T, which showcases M2M services in transport and logistics, automotives, home security, construction, manufacturing and healthcare during the fair, has 17 million M2M connections in 2014. It sees good prospects of penetrating the domestic market due to its joint venture with China Telecom, Horan said.
The M2M refers to technology that allows both wireless and wired systems to communicate with other devices and are widely used in Internet of Things and Smart Cities projects.
“China is investing in communications technologies that will make its cities smarter and provide a better quality of life for its citizens,” said GSMA analyst Alex Sinclair.
