HP invests to 'fully commit to China'
CHINA is no longer an emerging market for Hewlett-Packard Inc because of its huge potential which HP will continue to tap by raising investment.
HP will pump more funds in manufacturing and research in such places such as Shanghai, Beijing and west China's Chongqing. The company will continue its "leadership in hardware on PC and printer" and "fully commit to China" through designing products specifically for the domestic market.
"I don't think China is an emerging market anymore, as it has already evolved," Meg Whitman, president and CEO of the world's No. 1 personal computer maker, said yesterday at the HP Global Influencer Summit in Shanghai, her second visit to China within a month.
Her opinion was echoed by Sean Maloney, Intel China's chairman, who said during the summit that China's PC sales have surpassed the US this year to become the world's No. 1 PC market. It will double the size of the US market by 2015 or 2016.
Globally, HP led the PC market with 18 percent but its share in China was 5.3 percent by the end of last year, ranking No. 5 and lagging behind rivals including Lenovo, Acer and Dell, according to US-based IDC, a market research firm.
HP will launch new tablet computers that run on Microsoft's Windows system by the end of this year after it stopped producing Touchpad with its own WebOS system in August as it faced keen competition from Apple's iPad.
