Hanwang set to make e-reading a colorful sight
HANWANG Technology Co (Hanvon) will launch the world's first e-book reader with a color e-ink display next year, China's No.1 e-book reader said yesterday.
The Beijing-based company is going to expand into the booming mobile Internet market through new entry-level products and developing online book stores, Wang Bangjiang, its vice president, said during a interview at the China International Industry Fair 2010.
Different from traditional LCD (liquid crystal display) screens used in iPad and other devices, e-ink is a special technology for reading, which helps to conserve the e-reader's battery life for up to one month due to low power consumption.
At present, all e-ink readers are black and white devices, including Amazon's Kindle and Hanwang's products.
"The color display technology represents the future of both professional e-book readers and mobile devices including iPad. It will be a device boasting lots of functions and low power consumption," said Wang.
The color display e-ink device will debut next year and will cost 20 to 30 percent more compared with black and white models.
In 2009, sales of e-book devices hit 3.82 million units on Chinese mainland and the figure is expected to reach 9.1 million units this year, accounting for 20 percent of the global number, according to the General Administration of Press and Publication.
Shenzhen-listed Hanwang, which now occupies about 70 percent of the domestic market, will also expand its online book store which boasts 130,000 books, more than 100 newspapers and 300 magazines.
