Homegrown games lift income

DOMESTICALLY developed games accounted for 65 percent of China's total game industry revenue in 2009, industry officials said during a conference in Dalian yesterday.

The revenue of the Chinese game industry last year totaled 25.6 billion yuan (US$3.76 billion), an annual jump of 39 percent. In 2014, the industry revenue is expected to hit 50.8 billion yuan, according to China Game Industry Report, which was jointly released by several organizations including Sina Corp, Tencent INC and the People's Daily Website.

The number of game players will almost double from 65.9 million last year to 123 million in 2014, according to the report.

"The game industry kept its the high growth during the financial crisis, thanks to the stable market and domestically developed games," the report said.

Top game firms Shanda Games, Giant Inc, Perfect World and Kingsoft Corp attended the conference in Dalian in Liaoning Province.

Giant will double its investment to 200 million yuan this year to support internal and external teams to develop new games, the Shanghai-based firm said in an e-mail statement.

Perfect World expects to export US$100 million worth of games to overseas markets this year, double from the level in 2009, Chen Yufeng, its chairman and chief executive, said.

Shanda said last week that it would spend US$80 million to acquire United States-based game platform Mochi Media Inc to expand overseas, which would mark the first time a Chinese game company explores the game market in developed countries.
