Huawei ambitious on VR products
HUAWEI Technologies, the No.1 smartphone vendor in China, has established a research team of over 400 engineers on virtual reality products, which will be available to consumers this month, Shanghai Daily learned during the Mobile World Congress Shanghai today.
Huawei plans to focus on “mobile VR” products as accessories of high-end smartphones, which bring user rich experiences and boost sales of handsets, said He Gang, Huawei’s president of mobile phone business of consumer business group.
Huawei sold over 100 million smartphones in 2015 and expected to sell 140 million units this year. Huawei’s first-generation VR products, featuring 360-degree view and support of call and WeChat, are expected to boost its sales of flagship models like P9.
Huawei has established a team of “400 to 500”engineers on VR products. It will support the new product with favorable policies for developers, a VR fund and VR demonstrations in its 400 outlets nationwide.
“The perfect VR experience (among handset industries) won’t appear within two years,” said He. “But consumers have the rights to experience the latest technologies starting from now.”
According to Goldman Sachs, the VR and AR hardware income is expected to hit US$110 billion by 2025, which makes VR one of the hottest buzz words in the telecommunications show.
Top firms including HTC, Sony and Facebook have invested heavily on high-end VR headsets and accessories, which cost several thousand yuan. Smartphone makers like LeTV and Samsung have developed their own VR sets connecting their smartphones, which brings users basic VR experiences.
The joining of Huawei, also the world’s No.3 smartphone maker behind Samsung and Apple, will boost the whole VR industry development and make the technology more affordable and accessible, analysts said.
Each of Huawei’s VR sells about “several hundred yuan”, said He.
In the overseas markets, Huawei’s VR devices support Google’s Daydream VR standard.Daydream is expected to be officially released in autumn,according to Google and analysts.
