Huawei files suits against Samsung in China, US

HUAWEI Technologies yesterday said it is suing South Korea’s Samsung, the world’s biggest smartphone vendor, for alleged infringement of its patents.
The Chinese company, which is the world’s third-biggest smartphone seller, said it has filed lawsuits in California, United States, and Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province, and is seeking compensation for the unlicensed use of its cellular communications technology and software.
“We hope Samsung will respect Huawei’s research and development investment and patents, stop infringing our patents and get the necessary licenses,” Ding Jianxing, head of intellectual property rights, said in a statement.
“While respecting others’ patents, we will also protect our own,” he said. The company did not specify a figure for the compensation it is seeking.
Samsung responded with its own statement, in which it said: “We will thoroughly review the complaint and take appropriate action to defend Samsung’s business interests.”
Huawei currently holds more than 50,000 patents around the world covering 4G, operating systems and user interfaces for smartphones.
Last year alone, the company invested 59.6 billion yuan (US$9.1 billion), or 15 percent of its annual revenue, in research and development.
According to figures published this week by US-based research firm Gartner, Samsung had a 23.2 percent share of the global market for smartphone sales in the first quarter of this year, followed by Apple with 14.8 percent and Huawei with 8.3 percent.
