Huawei to spend US$2b in UK in 5 years
Huawei Technologies will invest US$200 million to set up a new research center in Britain, part of its US$2 billion spending on procurement and research in the country within the next five years, the Shenzhen-based firm said yesterday.
The research center will conduct studies on photoelectron, mobile end design and software development, according to the world’s No. 2 telecommunications network equipment vendor. Huawei will also expand the existing UK research center team to 300 engineers by 2017 from 80 now.
“Huawei aims to offer advanced and competitive broadband services in Britain,” Ren Zhengfei, Huawei’s founder and chairman, said in a statement yesterday. “Huawei is confident of the development in Britain thanks to its friendly and open environment.”
During his five-day trade mission to China, UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, who met Ren, said the country will remain open to investment from Chinese high-tech firms.
