IDC to quicken Smart City
SHANGHAI’S first cloud computing Internet Data Center will start operation in October, and the government aims to use it to accelerate its Smart City project in areas like urban management, education and public transport, Shanghai Daily learned yesterday.
The IDC will be used for data storage and recovery of cloud computing services in urban management, public transport, education, logistics and medical services, according to Shanghai Science and Technology Network Communications Co and Beijing-based China Entercom, a subsidiary of Citic Group.
The IDC’s high-speed Internet connection and huge storage volume will be a “milestone improvement” in the local information and communications technology infrastructure level, China Entercom said in a statement. The 14,000 square-meter IDC, built by the two companies, is located in Baoshan District.
Cloud computing allows users to save, edit, share and process data and files through various devices based on the online “cloud” platform and data centers for data storage. The technology will create 4 million new jobs in China by then, according to research firm International Data Corp. The revenue of China’s IDC market may double to 54.8 billion yuan (US$8.91 billion) in 2016 after rising 24.7 percent year on year to 26.3 billion yuan last year, said local research firm IDCQuan.com.
