Industrial design to be focus at event
SHANGHAI inaugurated a series of events and activities yesterday to nurture the industrial design sector as the city will host the fourth annual design week later this month, officials told a media briefing.
More than 100 related activities will take place from now till about a month after the 4th Shanghai Design Week, which will be held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center from September 25 to 27. Venues targeted for the promotional activities are shopping malls, hotels, office buildings and communities in Jing’an District.
This year’s design week will feature four key sectors covering fashion, smart technology, traditional handicraft and eco-living, with latest innovative design products from all over the world displayed.
The event aims to promote design cooperation between different walks of life. International designers from London and Paris, as well as experts from the United Nations, will take part in a key forum during the event to discuss how the design industry can better tap the capital market.
Liu Boying, head of Urban Industries Department at the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Informatization, said that industrial design businesses generated an output of 200 billion yuan (US$31.4 billion) in 2014 and contributed 70 billion yuan to Shanghai’s gross domestic product.
More than 100,000 visitors attended last year’s design week.
