Intel and Nokia bet on Meego for growth
INTEL Corp and Nokia Corp will jointly develop an operating platform to help them expand into the mobile device and auto electronics sectors in the booming Chinese market, industry officials said yesterday at a forum in Shanghai.
The platform called Meego, co-developed by the world's biggest chipmaker and handset vendor, will compete against other platforms offered by rivals like Apple Inc's iPhones and iPads which have captured a bigger share of the market.
Compared with other platforms, the Linux-based Meego is an open source code platform which allows developers to easily design and promote applications and software on it, Intel said during Meego China Developer Forum held yesterday in the city.
"China has become a contributor of the global open source platforms compared with just using them several years ago," said Liu Longgeng, a semiconductor division senior official of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. "In sectors like auto electronics and mobile devices, the platform has big market potential."
Firms like China Standard Software and Novell have produced tablet PCs and mobile devices based on Meego.
More than 95 percent of the world's super computers feature the Linux system, which is open and safe, according to Cliff Miller, director of China operations of the Linux Foundation.
"Linux has become a reality from a dream only. Top Chinese firms will join the trend," said Miller, who mentioned China Mobile had become a member of the foundation.
He added that Lenovo, Tencent and ZTE are expected to join Linux and probably launch Meego products.
The tablet PCs and mobile devices are set to become popular in China after Apple launched the iPad in the domestic market in September.
