Intel fights back with new faster processor
INTEL Corp's new chip will feature in a crop of new smartphones and 10 tablet computers by the end of this year, the world's biggest computer chip maker said in Beijing yesterday.
The new Atom processor, code-named Medfield, is Intel's newest weapon to fight back in the mobile device sector against Apple Inc and ARM, which dominate the market with their chips embedded in iPhones, iPads and Android models, industry insiders said.
"It's a year we prove ourself" in the mobile device sector, said Ian Yang, Intel China's president, in an interview during the annual Intel Developer Forum in Beijing.
Designed for smartphones and tablets, the chip offers higher computing performance and longer battery life. Intel China Chairman Sean Maloney said the new Lenovo K800 embedded with the Intel chip features a standby time of 14 days for the battery, compared with the iPhone battery's nine days. The K800 will go on sale in China at the end of May, said Wayne Chen, Lenovo's vice president.
Other device makers, including ZTE Corp and Motorola Inc, will also adopt Intel's new chip in their smartphones this year.
Intel said it is also working with 10 Chinese and global vendors to design Windows 8 platform tablets which will use the new chip.
