Intel takes aim at China's smart phone, tablet market

INTEL Corp and partners will launch smart phones and more than 10 tablet computers with Intel's new chip by the end of this year, including the first new Intel chip-based smart phone developed by Lenovo, the world's biggest computer chip maker said today in Beijing.
It was Intel's first salvo in the mobile device sector towards Apple Inc and ARM that dominate the market through iPhone, iPad and Android models and have challenged Intel's core personal computer chip business, industry insiders said.
Intel's newest Atom processor, code-named Medfield, is designed for smart phones and tablets, which provides high computing performance and offers long battery life. For example, the new Lenovo K800, with Intel's chip, features a standby time of 14 days, compared with iPhone's nine days, Sean Maloney, Intel China chairman, said during the annual Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in Beijing.
The K800 will go on sale in China at the end of May, according to Lenovo's vice president Wayne Chen, who also mentioned Lenovo's market shares in the domestic smart phone market is over 10 percent currently from only 1 percent several years ago.
Meanwhile, other device makers including ZTE Corp will adapt Intel's new chip in their mobile devices.
"You'll probably see many Intel-based tablets by the end of this year," said Maloney during his IDF keynote address.
Intel is working with 10 Chinese and global vendors to design Windows 8 tablets using the company's chips, it said.
