WUZHEN, an ancient watertown in Zhejiang Province, has become an “Internet Plus” town after its IT infrastructure was upgraded with the latest technologies as it hosts the three-day World Internet Conference from today.
President Xi Jinping, leaders of top Internet companies including Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent as well as overseas industry officials will attend the conference which focuses on issues ranging from Internet development, cyber community to online security.
Wi-Fi signals, offered by China Mobile and China Telecom, are covering the town where visitors are able to access a special Wuzhen zone when using Autonavi’s navigation service to get to the various meetings of the conference. Facial recognition technology is used by security to ensure visitors’ identity for greater efficiency of the security process.
Top dot-com firms showed off their technologies even before the conference is due to officially open today.
In the Light of the Internet Expo exhibition, which opened yesterday as part of the conference, Baidu showcased a driverless car while other giants including Tencent and Qihoo 360 displayed intelligent robots.
At the end of July, there were more than 668 million Internet users in China, almost double the population of the United States, the Chinese Academy of Cyberspace, a newly formed government think tank on the Internet, said in a report yesterday.
China’s Internet industry is in the stage of “integration and innovation” after growing rapidly from 2005 when there were about 100 million Internet users, said Yang Shuzhen, director of the academy.
