Internet of Things applications on display in Shanghai

UNMANNED aerial vehicles (UAV) monitoring environment conditions of paddy fields and in-vehicle systems checking availability of nearby parking lots are among the Internet of Things applications displayed in an industrial show that opened today in Shanghai.

Internet of Things, which refers to radio connection technologies among various devices to achieve industry upgrade and improve daily life, has been listed as a strategic industry for development in Shanghai, covering sectors like transportation, agriculture and healthcare.

A UAV featuring eight arms with sensors and cameras was displayed in the IOT China 2014. The vehicle can track temperature, humidity, air quality and plant growth situation.

"They are smart eyes for us to know growth situation and hedge potential risks beforehand," said Sun Dong, Shanghai Agriculture Information Co's marketing manager.

Now it's used in Chongming Island of Shanghai for paddy plants and agriculture insurance, said Sun.

Besides agriculture, IOT is used in the automotive industry for connection among cars, mobile phones and other infrastructure. Giants including Ford, Qoros, China Unicom and China Telecom attended the show.

Qoros showcased an application to help car owners to check availability for nearby parking lots, which charges users 300 yuan (US$49.2) a year.

For healthcare, Shanghai aims to establish detecting and diagnosis systems with IOT applications, which are expected to create an output of 10 billion yuan in 2020.
